I noticed on the way to work my car was running a bit rough at idle, on the way home it felt like i was backing off the gas slightly on the highway when i wasnt and when i got into town at the red light it was idleing worst, by time i got home it was pretty much ready to die. I started it back up and pushed in on all the wires and connectors and such first that didnt help. There is no strange noises coming from the engine, oil looks fine, temp and oil pressure is good. I have a transparent fuel filter and that is full of fuel. Sometimes the car idles around normal but sounds like a bit of a miss to it other times it drops and wants to die unless i give it gas.

Im thinking maybe a carb problem, i have a holley 4160 that i bought brand new and only used for 2 and half summers so far, what do you guys think? This is mainly just the stock 302 that came in our cars.

Sounds like maybe something in your gas tank blocking the sock... or if you still have a fuel filter in the back near the tank... it could be clogging

your fuel system might need some light servicing such as making sure there isn't any blockages in the carb orifices or filter(s) needing replaced, or moisture in the tank. It could be something like stang74shelby was mentioning, as old cars can get a little rust in the tank sometimes...plus fuel has additives that are more harsh than ever before. It's especially hard on rubber fuel line.

I went out today to start it and it wont start. It cranks, the carb is spraying a good stream of fuel when i hit the throttle but its not starting at all not even for a second. Seems like it might be a spark problem, the coil and ignition module are only bout 2 years old i tried the old module since it was an easy swap and that didnt make any difference. I think its still running the 32 old distributor, how would i go about testing it?

Have you pulled a wire and cranked it to see if there is spark?

Pulled a wire and there was no spark so i put my old coil on and the car fired right up. But it still idles like crap and seems to have a miss which is even more confusing cause its almost like 2 problems at once just all of a sudden.
I pulled off the egr hose and covered it with my finger and it sounded to me like the idle improved so i turned the car off while i blocked the hose and started it back up and it was idling bad again. I pulled 6 of the 8 spark plugs and they were all fine. last 2 were blocked by the battery and it was getting dark so i never got to check those yet.

Did it back fire out the carb at all, even a little bit, when it started acting up.?

My car also tries to die unless I give it gas, but it only happens once the car warms up. When it's cold it will start up every time.

this could be an issue with the idle mixture being too lean, causing it to die during warm idle - when it's cold, the idle could be fairly decent due to the choke causing a richer mixture...(?)

No backfires, just poor idle. Sometimes its near normal other times its around 400 rpm and almost dying. If i listen to the exhaust it sounds like theres a miss in the engine. Its hard to tell anything while driving it and giving it gas its almost seems normal but acceleration seems uneven at times like im letting off the gas a bit when im not. A friend was trying to check my timing but couldnt find the marks to use the light.

Im now thinking the coil failing was just a coencidence. I started the car cold today and it fired up and fast idled great at 1500rpm like usual. Soon as i put it off the fast idle it started to run choppy so i think its an carb problem. Ill pick up some carb cleaner tonight and try blowing it thru the mixture screw holes.

Dirty idle air bleeds can cause your problem.
1-is idle
2-is high speed

Is it running rich when the idle is low?

I sprayed out the air bleeds and it seemed to help i then sprayed out the metering block i believe where the fuel/air screws are. Started up choppy for a few seconds then smoothed right out. Seems to be back to normal, ill know for sure on my drive to work :) Thanks for all your help guys.

If it keeps acting up, check for a vacuum leak.

Runs fine now, nice to be able to drive again thanks again everyone. Only thing is now i have my old rusty coil hooked up so im going to buy a new one, these are available locally http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/flame/coils/40000_volt.aspx
and dont cost much. Can these be run on a stock system without other components?
