My Dad bought me my 78 Mach 1 for $4000 in the fall of 1999, one month before
I turned 16, with the agreement that I'd pay him back. However, my 16 year
old driving habits and the fact that the car sat in a garage most of it's
years since being driven to Canada from Arizona in 1990, most of my funds
went to minor mechanical repairs. I'm the 3rd owner and when I got it the
only things not original on it were the aftermarket hood scoop/ rear
spolier, air conditioning and it was on its 2nd paint job because of the
desert. To this day the motor with 84,000 miles remains original along with
its 2-barrel holley carb.
I almost lost the car in August 2004 when I
slowed down in the burnout pit of a parade-like cruise in my hometown. Some
kid power shifting in his Fiero wasn't watching where he was going. But
after straightening the frame and bumper, some taillights, cargo panelling
and a right rear quarter skin it is back on the road more than a year later
but looking as good as ever.
I'd like to thank mustangii.net because their
classifieds and parts section made repairing my car more convienient when
locating cargo panelling and a hatch lock. Even though compared to my 96
mystic, my Mach 1 rides rough, makes me sweat on hot days and drinks gas; I'm
proud to say my Mach 1 was my first, and will be my last car.
