Ford Mustang II
R&T Buyer's Guide
As we've said before, the success of the Mustang II proves that small specialty car buyers don't necessarily want small, cheap cars. What they do want, though, is colorful personality and the Mustang certainly gives them that. In fact, the only real differences you will note between the 1976 and 1977 models are new colors and option packages, as the Mustang II's only visual change since its introduction in 194 came when they moved the grille out a bit to fit the V-8 in behind.
Mos obvious of the changes in hue are those to the very, very successful Cobra II option, which can now be had in not only the original blue stripes on white, but also gold on black, white on blue, white on red and white on green. There is also a Sports Group for the Ghia option and something called the Appearance Decor Group for the hardtop and 2 + 2 models. The option list is also lengthended with more luxury items, such as a 4-way manually adjustable driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and two different sunroof options. One is the Moonroof you can flip up to the rear to aid ventilation or remove completely, the other is Ford's rendition of the popular hatch-roof with a removable glass panel.
Engine specifications go unaltered, with the inadequate 2.3-liter four as base, followed by the more reasonable 2.8-liter V-6 and the more than reasonable 302-cu-in. V-8. All three engines can be had with 3-speed automatic or the base 4-speed manual. The other corporate engineering changes, such as DuraSpark ignition and the new corrosion protection, also apply to the Mustang II.
